Back Pain

Back Pain Q & A

What causes back pain?

Back pain is a common and serious ailment, which can be short lived or long lasting.  Back pain can occur from injury such as auto accidents, lifting something heavy improperly, sports injuries, obesity, subluxations, kidney stones and so forth. Physical conditions causing knee or hip problems, arthritis, spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis, conditions affecting the spine or discs such as herniated discs, or nerve-related problems can also cause back pain. Determining the underlying cause of back pain requires special expertise in order to ensure the most effective and appropriate treatment is applied.

How is back pain diagnosed?

Back pain is diagnosed with an examination, which includes a range of motion test, orthopedic tests, muscle tests, and neurological test. During the exam, passive movements may also be used to pinpoint pain sources, and patients may be asked to perform simple exercises as well. The doctor will also palpate the affected area, and take X-rays based on medical necessity.  If further testing is necessary to diagnose the problem, the Dr. will then order an MRI and/or CT Scan as necessary.

How is back pain treated?

The condition causing the back pain will first be diagnosed and assessed to deliver the best possible treatment. Generally, the goal of treatment is to reduce pain and restore movement. If there is an underlying condition causing continued pain that will be addressed as well. Virginia Family Chiropractic offers many different options for treatment such as traction, spinal manipulation, decompression, therapeutic stretches, strengthening exercises, ice/heat therapies, braces, and massage therapies to name a few. A continuous care plan will be recommended to ensure long lasting benefits. Each treatment plan is custom tailored for each individual and depends on the specific condition/age/genetics of the individual.  Contact the offices, or Dr. Hatam directly, to discuss the best possible treatment measures.
